Nearly 30 Years of DensDeck® Roof Boards – Proven Performance

With billions of square feet installed in a complete range of roofing systems and climate extremes, DensDeck® Roof Boards have proven their toughness and versatility. The unique construction has been shown to withstand delamination, deterioration, warping and job site damage far more effectively than other roofing products such as wood fiberboard and perlite.

DensDeck Roof Boards were designed to address persistent challenges inherent in commercial roofing assemblies, including fire resistance, strength and dimensional stability when installed in a properly designed roof assembly. The fiberglass mat-faced, noncombustible (as described and tested in accordance with ASTM E136), nonstructural, gypsum core panels provide superior fire resistance and protection from hail damage and hold up well under normal construction and maintenance foot traffic while stiffening and stabilizing roof decks.

DensDeck Roof Boards are easy to install in all types of roof systems and are an ideal product for direct membrane application. DensDeck Roof Boards have also been tested within roofing systems for sound isolation. Dens® Solutions are industry trusted, high-performing fiberglass mat gypsum panels suitable for your wall, roof, ceiling and floor projects. Dens Solutions carry the mark of our valued heritage in Gold, as a visible standard-bearer of our position as the first manufacturer to create a fiberglass mat board and as a relentless innovator of strength and moisture resistant products for over 30 years. Dens Solutions answer building challenges with ingenuity.

Fire Resistance

Non combustible: materials don’t add fuel to an active fire

Accidental Puncture

Membranes tested with DensDeck® Roof Board are more puncture resistant

Foot Traffic

DensDeck® Roof Board helps protect the insulation from potential damage

Wind Uplift

Roof cover boards add strength to the assembly, reinforcing the roof’s structural integrity to better hold against the force of the wind.

Very Severe Hail

DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Board is FM classified for Very Severe Hail (VSH) in approved single-ply membrane assemblies.

Georgia-Pacific’s DensDeck® Roof Board was the first glass fibre mat faced, gypsum based board for use as a cover board in flat roofing. For over 30 years it has proved it is strong, highly moisture resistant, non-combustible and can improve the overall performance of your roof

Since DensDeck® Roof Board redefined roof boards in 1987, Georgia-Pacific’s innovation has continued producing industry-leading high-performance roof boards. EONIC™ Technology has doubled the moisture resistance of DensDeck® Prime Roof Board, and the new DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Boards helps mitigate the forays of extreme weather including severe hail.

Including a high performance roof board in your roofing system is essential to the protection of the building and the valuable contents inside. Industry professionals count on DensDeck® Roof Boards to enhance the performance of their roofing systems.

The best way to protect the roof is to prepare for the worst by building the best. In the event of a fire, choosing the right high-performance roof board for your building can make all the difference in protecting the roof. But the materials used in the roof boards also make a difference. DensDeck®, DensDeck® Prime, DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Boards are made from both gypsum and glass mat, both fire-resistant and noncombustible materials.

Whether the source of a fire is inside the building or out, it needs oxygen, fuel, and heat to progress. Combustible roofing materials can ignite and fuel a fire when exposed to the right conditions. But noncombustible materials may help starve an active fire by depriving it of additional substance to burn, while also blocking flames and heat from igniting adjacent layers in the roof. DensDeck®, DensDeck® Prime, DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Boards are made from materials that will help enhance the fire resistance of the roofing assembly.

A well-designed roofing system will have the strength and resistance to hold up under a variety of conditions for the duration of its lifespan.

Dropped tools and heavy equipment can make for dangerous conditions while installing, repairing, and performing maintenance on a roof. From simple maintenance-related holes to large tears associated with dislodged equipment, punctures big and small can leave the insulation exposed to the invading effects of moisture, airflow, and bulk water. A falling tool or heavy hammer can pierce the assembly, which is why a rigid roof board, like DensDeck®, can help protect the more vulnerable materials within. DensDeck® Prime and DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Boards’ increased compressive strength, compared to some other roof cover boards, helps them withstand puncture under impact.

The stress of human foot traffic on the roof during installation, maintenance work, or rooftop public use can also lead to accelerated membrane wear and punctures, which left unchecked can leave openings for water to seep through. Preventing damage to the insulation layer, which could impact the building’s overall energy efficiency, with the use of a roof cover board, could help make the roof last longer.

Regardless of what type of building you own and where it’s located, all structures are at risk of suffering from wind damage, most specifically wind uplift. When heavy winds meet the side of a building, the force exerts strong pressure against the structure, pushing the air upward and across the roof. This pressure builds underneath the roof, which is when the highest potential damage can occur. If the pressure under the roof is stronger than above, it’s at risk of pulling the materials apart, causing damage to the roof structure and often leading to roof failure. Adding a high-performance DensDeck® Roof Board as a cover board strengthens the entire roofing assembly, helping mitigate the risk of damage that often comes with storms and severe winds.

In response to intense weather trends in recent years, the roofing industry is adapting to the growing weather-related concerns. Although hail resistance has always been a part of FM Approvals’ roof system certifications, increased hailstorm intensity has resulted in FM Approvals adding a Very Severe Hail (VSH) rating to its categories for hail resistance classification. (Learn more about the VSH FM rating here.)

DensDeck® Prime Roof Board is recommended for all MH (moderate hail) and SH (severe hail) systems, while DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Board further enhances the hail resistance of any of these systems-approved for use in single-ply assemblies meeting FM VSH classification. Consult FM Approval’s RoofNav for specific VSH-rated assemblies.
