TOOLS AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT

Dropped tools and heavy equipment can make for dangerous conditions while installing, repairing, and performing maintenance on a roof. From simple maintenance-related holes to large tears associated with dislodged equipment, punctures big and small can leave the insulation exposed to the invading effects of moisture, airflow, and bulk water. A falling tool or heavy hammer can pierce the assembly, which is why a rigid roof board can help protect the more vulnerable materials within. DensDeck® Prime and DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Boards’ increased compressive strength helps them withstand puncture under impact.

HAIL AND OTHER WINDBORNE OBJECTS

Hefty hailstones and debris-filled windstorms are clear causes of puncture concerns. In areas prone to hailstorms, the stones of falling ice are a major concern for low-slope assemblies. To stand strong without costly repairs after a storm, the roof assembly must also be capable of enduring the pressure of impact from fast-moving objects of any size. DensDeck® Prime and DensDeck® StormX™ Prime Roof Boards have passed the National Bureau of Standards’ NBS Procedure 23 (evaluating commercial roofing materials’ hail resistance) and independent ASTM International dynamic puncture-resistance testing (ASTM D5635).  DensDeck® StormX™ Roof Boards were developed to address severe weather trends and is FM classified for VSH (very severe hail) roof assemblies. It also helps with ASCE 7-16 / IBC-related requirements that have been enacted in response to the latest weather trends.

FOOT TRAFFIC

The stress of human foot traffic on the roof during installation, maintenance work, or rooftop public use can lead to accelerated membrane wear and punctures, which left unchecked can leave openings for water to seep through. Damage to the insulating material below can decrease its R value (thermal resistance to conductive heat flow) and affect the building’s energy efficiency and internal climate control. Not to mention, water trapped in the insulation material can quickly breed mold and spores, potentially damaging the structural integrity and creating unhealthy indoor air quality. But adding a DensDeck® Prime or DensDeck® StormX™ Roof Board to the assembly can help protect against these puncture-related damages.
